Luxembourg City is once again poised to turn into a winter wonderland as the big switch on of the 'Winterlights' this week symbolises the start of many festive activities that continue until January.

Thursday 22 November is the date when not only the lights illuminate the City, but also when the ice rink opens on Place Guillaume II, and the Christmas markets on Place d'Armes and Place de la Constitution open.

The "Knuedler on Ice" rink  will remain open until 6 January. With half of the 800 square metre rink covered under a marquis, even bad weather cannot stop the fun.

Some 20,000 LED lights inside add to the festive atmosphere where skates are available for rent.

Even if you do not want to head out on to the ice, the rink offers a heated tent and six chalets with snacks and mulled wine to keep warm.

Opening times are: Sunday to Thursday from 11am to 9pm, and Fridays to Saturdays from 11am to 10pm. On New Year's Eve the ice rink will be open late from 11am until 2am for a night of new year fun.

Entry is €5 with skates available for €2. A locker to leave valuables is for rent at 0.50 euros. Skaters need to wear gloves on the ice.

Shopping

As well as the traditional Christmas markets in various locations around the City, shops are open in the capital every Sunday from 25 November until 30 December for Christmas shopping from 2pm to 6pm.

Throughout the Winterlights festival, a market will be held twice a week on Place Guillaume II every Wednesday and Saturday from 8am to 2pm.

A City Shopping bus will run from Sunday to Thursday until 9:30pm, and Fridays and Saturdays until 10:30pm, apart from Christmas eve and New Year's Eve when it stops at 4:30pm.

The day after at the same times in the same place, a special winter flea market will take place.

Other festive events include a Saint Nicholas procession through the streets of the capital on 2 December, the "Advent" circus in the Glacis car park from 30 November until 16 December, expositions, theatre and concerts at the Conservatoire.
