A luxury apartment in Kirchberg has hit the market and buyers can live like royalty if they are willing to shell out two times the regular asking price for property in the area.

The €7.3 million penthouse on Rue Jean-Pierre Sauvage comes with all the trimmings spread over 330 square metres (sqm), including a kitchen that once served as a ballroom.

One of the real estate agencies managing the sale states that the apartment once belonged to a senior member of the Luxembourg Grand Ducal family. The identity of the current owner has not been disclosed.

At €22,000 per sqm the property lies well above local prices, which the Observatoire de l'habitat – an independent price monitoring body – sets at around €9,000 per sqm of living surface.

Located on the 12th floor of a block of flats dating back to 1978, the refurbished property offers panorama views of the city from its 320sqm terraces.

Other amenities include four garages, a private lift and a jacuzzi.

An online mortgage calculator indicates monthly payments of €27,900 for 25-year financing, given a 2% interest rate and 10% down payment – already a staggering €730,000.
