(CS) A job retention plan will save 263 jobs at the Luxguard II site in Dudelange, after months of protests and negotiations.

The glass manufacturer Guardian Luxguard II SA and Guardian Europe SARL agreed to the plan which includes the reparation of one of the site's ovens.

The oven will be able to operate for around another four years, while a decision is pending for a more thorough and more costly refurbishment of the furnace, which would allow for an increase in production quantity and quality.

Luxembourg union OGBL has meanwhile agreed to find ways to cut labour costs in order to ensure the competitiveness of the plant in Dudelange.

The job retention plan agreement was preceded by intense discussions between Economy Minister Etienne Schneider, shareholders and the Guardian group in the US.

Both Schneider and Labour Minister Nicolas Schmit welcomed the decisions and efforts on all sides to maintain industrial activity in Dudelange, and thanked all partners for bringing constructive but “not always easy” talks to a satisfactory conclusion.

The government has pledged to make means available for such measures as partial unemployment and early retirement to accompany the refurbishment of the site and to reduce costs.
