DuPont is to axe up to 30 jobs in Luxembourg as part of a global restructuring plan to curb falling profits.

The Contern-based production site, which produces polyester films, non-woven webs and elastomers and currently employs 1,150 people, will see 25 to 30 jobs axed within the administrative departments.

DuPont management in Contern were open about the strategy. A spokesperson said that the plan "does not affect the production. 25-30 administrative positions will be eliminated" in Contern.

Not all the staff affected will be made redundant, however. Some employees are expected to be migrated to other positions to avoid redundancies.

The aim of the restructuring is to "increase productivity, enhance competitiveness and accelerate growth," the company said.

Including the cuts in Contern, some 1,500 positions around the world are to be axed over the next 12-18 months, the spokesman explained.

The move comes after a disappointing year for profits. DuPont hopes that its actions will make pre-tax savings of around 450 million USD, or 300 million USD in 2013 by cutting costs in the Performance Coatings business and targeting other areas.

In a statement released on Friday DuPont Luxembourg was optimistic that "the company remains on track to achieve its targets for the year in terms of productivity, both in terms of fixed costs in terms of capita."
