The formation of Luxembourg's new government has resulted in some reshuffling on local communes with a number of new faces taking on the role of mayor in their respective communes.

The formation of Luxembourg's new government has resulted in some reshuffling on local communes with a number of new faces taking on the role of mayor in their respective communes.

Because eight members of the new 18-strong government formerly occupied roles as mayors, new candidates have had to be found to replace them.

Here is a brief overview of the new mayors:

  • City of Luxembourg: Lydie Polfer will be the new mayor, succeding Xavier Bettel. Ms Polfer previously served as mayor between 1982 and 1999. She is the daughter of Camille Polfer, who was also Mayor of the City (1980-1982). He relinquished his position to his daughter in 1982.
  • Esch-sur-Alzette: Vera Spautz will succeed Lydia Mutsch. Vera Spautz has served as alderman of Esch-sur-Alzette since 2000. She has been a deputy since 2004.
  • Mondorf-les-Bains: Lex Delles will replace Maggy Nagel. Lex Delles is the youngest in the Chamber of Deputies aged just 28 years old. His father, Roland Delles, was mayor of Mondorf-les-Bains from 1994 to 1996 before being succeeded by Maggy Nagel.
  • Differdange: John Hoffmann takes the reins in Differdange where he succeeds Claude Meisch. John Hoffmann is a GP in Differdange, like his father before him.
  • Mondercange: Christine Schweich succeeds Dan Kersch. The young lawyer, who celebrates her 30th birthday next Sunday, is passionate about hunting and cycling.
  • In Erpeldange, Beckerich and Feulen, local councilors are currently discussing who will be their next mayor.
