Workers in Luxembourg will get an extra day's holiday allowance next year and a new public holiday also starts in 2019.

The official confirmation was made on Tuesday by prime minister Xavier Bettel, who presented his government's programme for the next five years to parliament.

However, in order for the plan for the addition of these two extra free days to enter into force, they will have to be voted on in parliament. Its application therefore is dependent on the results and voting of the respective law.

This increase takes the number of holiday allowance for employees in Luxembourg from 25 to 26 days per year.

In addition, a new country-wide public holiday will start. Europe Day, on 9 May, will be celebrated in Luxembourg with a day of rest.
