Luxembourg's Automobile Club has issued a list of motorways to avoid in Europe ahead of the holiday season when millions of motorists head home.

Luxembourg's Automobile Club (ACL) has issued a list of motorways to avoid in Europe ahead of the holiday season when millions of motorists head home.

With Christmas less than a week away, a number of European motorways are expected to be overrun with traffic beginning on Friday afternoon and continuing through until Saturday.

Among the worst affected motorway sections in Germany will be:

  • A 5 Karlsruhe - Basel
  • A 6 Mannheim - Heilbronn - Nuremberg
  • A 7 Ulm - Füssen- A 8 Stuttgart - Munich - Salzburg
  • A 9 Nuremberg - Munich
  • A 93 Inntaldreieck - Kufstein
  • A 99 Bypass Munich

Motorists should avoid travel on certain roads in France from Friday (December 21) between 2pm and 8pm and Saturday from 9am to 6pm when a code orange alert has been issued. During these times, slow-moving traffic and congestion are expected on the following stretches of road:

  • Paris region (Ile de France)
  • A 6 Beaune - Macon - Lyon
  • A 31 Luxembourg - Metz - Nancy - Dijon - Beaune
  • A 40 Macon - Bourg-en-Bresse - Chamonix
  •  A 43 / A 48 Lyon - Grenoble
  • A 43 Lyon - Chambery - Saint Jean de Maurienne

The worst affected areas in Austria include:

  • The west motorway A1 (Salzburg - Vienna),
  • The Tauern motorway A 10 (Salzburg - Villach),
  • Inntalautobahn A 12 (Kufstein - Innsbruck),
  • Brenner motorway A 13 (Innsbruck - Brenner),
  • Rhine Valley motorway A14 (Lindau - Bregenz - Arlberg),
  • The Arlberg expressway S 16 (Innsbruck - Arlberg - Bludenz)
  • The Fern Pass route B 179 (Füssen - Reutte - Nassereith) most exposed.

Travellers through Switzerland should expect delays in the following locations:

  • The Gotthard route A 2 before the Gotthard tunnel, especially in the south.
  • The access roads in the winter sports regions of Grisons, the Bernese Oberland and Valais. The Autoverladestationen Furka, Vereina and Lötschberg.

In Italy, delays are expected on:

  • The A 22 Brenner motorwa.
  • Access roads into Puster, Val Gardena and Alta Badia.
