Organisers of the World Balloon Trophy competition in Echternach had a frustrating start to the tournament when all flights were grounded.

Torrential rain dogged the opening ceremony of the event on Wednesday evening and the weather continued to hamper the itinerary as today all flights were cancelled, this time because of fog.

The annual competition this year features 31 of the best hot air balloon pilots from 11 different countries competing for a place on the podium.

A pilot briefing has been scheduled for 5.30pm today when organisers will decide whether or not to run the competition during the evening.

The LUXGSM World Balloon Trophy is due to culminate in a weekend of activities for the public, including Saturday's highlight- a Night Glow presentation over Echternach's lake and a special appearance from national cycling hero Fränk Schleck on Sunday.
