Brexit opponents call for EU passport system
(JB) An online petition calling for a kind of EU passport for UK citizens or fast-track for gaining nationality in another EU country has garnered over 22,000 signatures.
The petition was launched a month ago following the June 23 referendum in which a narrow majority voted in favour of Britain's departures from the EU.
It states that British citizens have been EU citizens since 1993 and for many, “EU citizenship is a birthright.”
It wants the EU to offer a means for UK citizens to retain their European citizenship, for example by creating a European Passport or fast-track to citizenship of an EU nation.
“We are proud European citizens. We have supported and been supported by the EU for decades, and we fought to Remain in Europe. Please offer a way for us to stay,” the petition reads.
Once the petition has garnered 150,000 signatures, it is to be submitted to the Council of the European Union.
