(ADW) A car driver was injured when his vehicle caught fire and crashed into a tree in the early hours of Thursday morning.

The incident happened at about 3am on a stretch of Rue de Bous between Oetrange and Pleitrange in the south-east of the country.

The driver, and sole occupant of the car, was reported to have been found by emergency services outside the burning vehicle when they arrived. However, it wasn't clear whether he managed to escape the wreckage or he was thrown out by the impact into the tree.

In an explanation to police, the man stated that his car had caught fire while driving and he attempted to get it to a garage, home or a less isolated area as quickly as possible. However while driving at speed, he lost control and crashed head on into a tree.

The small fire quickly broke out into a blaze that engulfed the vehicle, reducing it to a wreckage although fire fighters were able to eventually extinguish the fire.

The driver, suffering only minor injuries, was taken to hospital.
