Cargolux will never land at Frankfurt-Hahn, Luxembourg's Infrastructure Minister told unions in a meeting on Monday in a bid to quash rumours.

The meeting was called by aviation branches of the LCGB and OGBL with Minister François Bausch following revelations that Cargolux's partner airport in Zhengzhou China, had signed a deal with two rival airports in Germany.

“The minister has rejected the idea that Cargolux could in future land at Hahn, as a total fantasy,” the aviation branch of the OGBL said after the meeting.

Mr Bausch reassured the unions that the agreement signed by Zhengzhou, the base of Cargolux shareholder HNCA, with the German airports was not binding.

He said that Zhengzhou simply had a “memorandum of understanding” with them, without any concrete commitment. HNCA invested 250 million USD in Cargolux and will shortly operate four regular flights between Luxembourg and Zhengzhou.

“According to the minister, the fact that the airport in Zhengzhou has links with Frankfurt Hahn and Leipzig changes nothing in the partnership concluded between Cargolux and HNCA,” an LCGB spokesperson said in a statement.

During the meeting, the LCGB proposed a round table discussion with all those involved in the logistics and air freight sectors to produce a report on the actual state of the two inter-dependent sectors and analyse their potential future evolution. Minister Bausch said he would try to organise such a discussion.
