Luxembourg's multi-cultural population will come into its own this weekend when the International Bazaar returns for two days of food, friendship and fundraising.

The annual event, of which this year marks the 57th edition, will see more than 60 countries represented at Luxexpo The Box selling national wares, food and promoting their respective countries. Some stands are even offering song and dance performances.

But with more than 70 different stands to navigate, touring the bazaar for the first time can prove demanding. That is why the English Wort has put together a list of the top 10 highlights at this year's International Bazaar.

Raffles and tombolas

If you're feeling lucky why not buy tickets to any of the many tombolas organised by the different stands? Tickets can cost as little as a couple of euros but the prizes can be highly impressive, including holidays and restaurant vouchers, among other things. Remember to keep your ticket safe after the bazaar. Many of the winners are contacted after it has finished and it would be a shame to miss out on a prize.

Book sale

If you're the kind of person who can spend hours poring over second-hand books, the English language book stand is a must-see. From children and adult fiction to non-fiction and reference books, the choice is rarely disappointing. Be sure to make space on your bookshelf before leaving home!

Food, glorious food

Food is one of the points of pride of most countries and with more than 60 different nations represented, the bazaar takes eating to another level. While we couldn't possibly recommend one cuisine over another, there is one tip to anyone visiting with an empty stomach – take a tour before buying food. There is so much choice and variety, it would be a shame to fill up and miss out on other exciting foods.

Raise a glass

Food at the International Bazaar is often the first thing people talk about but there are also some exotic and unusual drinks you can try too. South American cocktail Pisco sour is one to check out at the Peruvian or Chile stands as is the famous Irish coffee found at the Irish stand. If you're driving, there's always root beer (USA) or tea (UK).

Travel somewhere new

The beauty of the bazaar is that you may come into contact with people from far-flung countries you might never have considered visiting before. To make the most, why not pick a country you've never been to and learn more about the culture through talking to the enthusiastic volunteers, buying traditional crafts and picking up information leaflets.

Shopping

The bazaar is clearly a chance to shop to buy Christmas gifts or just treat yourself. Most stands will sell the very best produce from their country, be it hand bags, woollens, jewellery or food, for example. Remember to take cash and if you run out, there is a cash point at the entrance to Luxexpo The Box.

People and Royals

Because of the popularity of the International Bazaar, you're more than likely to bump into people you know here. With so many visitors, it's a great social and even networking occasion, not to mention a chance to rub shoulders with royalty. On Saturday afternoon, Luxembourg's Grand Duchess Maria Teresa and Hereditary Grand Duchess Stéphanie will attend. So expect crowds.

Theatre and performance

Many participating countries have a fascinating folklore and bring this out with musical and dramatic performances, all free of charge.

Crèche

The bazaar is hugely popular attracting large crowds, which is a consideration for parents with young children who may tire easily. If you'd rather not put your children through that but want to have a tour, you can use the crèche service offered by International Bazaar volunteers. More information can be found at the entrance. Spaces are limited.

Helping others

Charity is the real heart of the bazaar, in fact it is the largest international independent charity event in the country, which last year raised 580,000 euros. This year, all proceeds will go to 75 charities, of which several will receive substantial donations.

The principal charity this year is Fundebe (Foundation for the development of Benin), an organisation in Benin. The funds raised from the International Bazaar will be used to finance a new school building for kindergarten, primary and secondary education, new water wells and the installation of a rainwater collection system.
