Facebook most popular social network in Luxembourg
(CS) Facebook was the most popular social network in Luxembourg last year, with data by national statistics office Statec showing 57 percent of the population as users of the platform.
On the whole, the report found that 60 percent of the Grand Duchy's residents are registered with a social network. A majority of them (64 percent) were signed up with one social network only, with only around a third subscribed to several services.
The most popular social networks were Facebook (57 percent), LinkedIn (9 percent), Google+ and Twitter (8 percent each). Only 3 percent of Luxembourg residents use Instagram, the report found. Popular mobile messaging service WhatsApp was used by only 1 percent of the population.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, some 91 percent of young people used social media, compared to just over a quarter of those aged 65 to 74.
The most commonly cited reasons for using social media were staying in touch with friends and relatives (82 percent), finding back old friends (74 percent) and sharing pictures and videos (57 percent).
Those who did not use social media most frequently said that they did not want to share their private life online (74 percent), as well as not seeing the use of social media (63 percent) and fears of data violation (59 percent).
Cloud computing, too, was more popular among young people, with some 50 percent of those aged 16 to 24 using cloud data storage, with that number steadily reducing to just 26 percent of those aged 55 to 74.
Luxembourg was, however, above the EU28 average, on the use of cloud storage. Across the EU only 36 percent of young people use the cloud, compared to 18 percent of those aged 55 to 74, the report said.
