Heart choices, not hard choices!
(JB) Luxembourg hopes to equip its residents with the skills and knowledge to fight the country's single biggest killer - heart disease.
To mark World Heart Day on September 29, the health ministry along with the Luxembourg cardiology society (SLC) will man stands, host workshops and give tests at the Centre Hospitalier over two days.
The campaign aims to raise awareness of the risk factors which can lead to cardiovascular disease, while sharing prevention advice. There will even be a quiz to test people's knowledge.
In 2013, nearly a third of deaths in Luxembourg were caused by avoidable cardio-vascular disease.
Cardiovascular disease, including acute myocardial infarction and stroke, affect everyone, regardless of age, race, socio-economic group.
It can be avoided through a balanced diet low in fat, sugar and salt and through maintaining a healthy weight.
Quitting smoking can significantly reduce cardiovascular risk as can reducing alcohol consumption and increasing physical activity.
The Health Ministry urges people to regularly check blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar levels.
