Organ donor app to launch in Luxembourg
Work is underway to create an app where people in Luxembourg can register their position regarding organ donation, removing the need to carry an organ donor card.
Luxembourg law works on a basis of presumed consent whereby everyone is a potential organ donor in the event of their death unless they opt out.
However, currently Luxtransplant, the medical team in charge of the country's organ donation operations, always checks with the next of kin, placing a difficult burden on families and more often than not reducing the number of donations.
Work on the new app for smartphones is underway and will notify an individual's next of kin and Luxtransplant regarding their wishes, it was revealed ahead of World Organ Donation Day on October 20.
To mark the occasion, an indoor cycling marathon is planned at Luxexpo in Kirchberg from 10am until 7pm on Sunday. There will also be an information booth based at Cactus Belle Etoile in Bertrange from October 18-25.
Organ Donation is described as an anonymous, free and generous act of solidarity which can save lives. Currently, people wishing to donate organs after their death are urged to carry “Passeports de vie”, also known as donor cards.
