Divers clean up the Sûre Lake after busy season
(MSS/ArWa) Over 200 divers gathered to help clean up the bottom of the Sûre Lake after a season with visits from thousands of sun and water seeking visitors.
The Lac de Haut Sûre is not only Luxembourg's largest drinking water reservoir, but also a popular “beach” destination for locals and tourists alike. But after a summer with thousands visiting and barbecues by the shore, large amounts of rubbish unfortunately found it's way to the bottom of the lake.
In keeping with tradition of the past 28 years, Sub Aqua Sports Dudelange arranged a general cleaning of the Sûre, also known as "Stausee", with some 200 divers from 28 different clubs taking part. The divers were transported by lifeboats to their respective cleaning spots above and below water.
They then dived to depths of up to 12 metres, returning to the surface with rubbish such as bottles, cans, plastic packaging, clothing items and metal items.
The collected waste was picked up by commune workers and taken to a disposal container.
