An extremely drunk motorist caused mayhem in the north of Luxembourg on Monday night, driving on the opposite side of the road forcing oncoming traffic to swerve on the grass verges.

The scene was first spotted by police at about 10:45pm on the N7 between Marnach and Dorscheid when a white Peugeot 108 showed no reaction to other vehicles as the driver swerved recklessly into the opposite lane.

In order to escape collision, oncoming motorists were forced to swerve partially into roadside ditches or on the grass verge.

Even the sirens and flashing lights of a pursuing police car didn't trigger a response from the driver.

However, as the car reached a crossroads it slowed down, making it possible for the officers to leap out of their vehicle and stop the reckless driver by reaching through the window and pulling the handbrake.

The motorist proved to be extremely drunk, and his driving licence was immediately seized.

In order to clarify the exact circumstances of the incident and the possible damage the man caused during his drunken drive, police are asking for people who may have witnessed the erratic drive, or who may have had their vehicles damaged in the area on Monday night, to come forward.
