Findel airport reports positive year
(CS) Some 1.79 million passengers travelled via Findel in 2011, estimates Luxairport chief Ferdinand Brisbois, while cargo turnover decreased.
The Luxair Tours holiday booking service is thought to have added to the rise in passenger numbers in 2011 while the rainy summer led to an increase in holidaymakers opting for southern holiday destinations. Additionally, Mr Brisbois said that business travel had picked up again.
In the cargo sector, Luxairport registered a decline of 7% in the past year. Mr Brisbois credits the slow-down in the economy with the negative impact on the exchange of goods. In 2010 the freight turnover at Findel still lay at 735,000 tonnes.
Frankfurt Hahn airport in Germany, on the other hand, measured an opposite trend, with passenger numbers going down but cargo services increasing significantly.
After Ryanair struck a third of its flights from Hahn off the schedule, it is estimated that passenger numbers decreased by around 18%.
However, Air Cargo Germany and Silk Way Airlines contributed to a 37% increase in cargo turnover at Hahn airport, amounting to 205,700 tonnes.
