Etienne Schneider to replace Jeannot Krecké
(ADW) Etienne Schneider, the current right hand of Economy Minister Jeannot Krecké, replaces him from 1 February. He was appointed on Monday evening by the LSAP General Council.
The meeting of 90 members participating in the General Council lasted nearly an hour. It was at the end of this meeting that party chairman, Alex Bodry, formally announced the vote: Etienne Schneider received more than 83% of the votes in his favour.
Previously the national committee had proposed to the General Council to support the candidacy of Etienne Schneider, and therefore not to vote for Nicolas Schmit.
Alex Bodry stated, “We chose the simplest solution. Any other solution would require an agreement of our coalition partner. But the main reason is that we wanted a renewal of our government team. The other argument is that Etienne fully fits the profile. On the other hand, Etienne Schneider is more in the centre (ed: policy-wise) and replaces Jeannot Krecké who is also in the centre. "
As for Nicolas Schmit - who according to some rumours would have threatened to resign in case of refusal of his application - Alex Bodry launched the following message: "We support all members of the Socialist government. Everyone must now focus on the work that awaits them in their ministry. "
The choice of the LSAP has yet to be officially accepted by the Grand Duke.
