Fire truck swallowing hole - the reason!
(ADW) Just why did a gaping hole suddenly appear in the ground swallowing a fire engine in Grevenmacher? The explanation lies six metres underground agreed experts on Monday afternoon.
So what caused the 20-metre wide hole in the “Promenade de la Moselle” tarmac? That's been the question on everyone's lips since the surprising event occurred just over a week ago.
And now the answer has been found. A number of elements point to the installation of a sewage pipe six to eight metres underground as the culprit. The process of boring a tunnel through the ground in order to insert a pipe is likely to have caused the ground above to collapse.
Although this appears to be the main reason, the full report will not be available until about Thursday.
But,"it is still very likely that there is a connection with the tunnel boring work" stated Jean-Marie Ries from the organisation Eastern Inter-communal Wastewater Treatment (SIDEST).
He stated that “the hole will probably not be filled in as the opportunity will now help to advance work at the surface" as another two other pipes need to be installed just under the promenade, a waste pipe and an urban heating pipe.
