Firefighters did their best to prevent a fuel leak from contaminating the Alzette river on Thursday afternoon.

The diesel had spilled into a drain after a truck driver ripped a hole in the vehicle's tank after reversing into a pole outside a supermarket in Walferdange at around 12.30pm.

According to police, firefighters pumped the remaining fuel out of the tank to prevent further leaks. They then set up oil barriers on the Alzette river and in adjacent drains to stem the spread of the fuel. Altogether 400 litres of fuel was thought to have leaked from the tank.
