Emergency services launched a major operation on Sunday night after heavy rainfall flooded the Cité Simminger in Itzig.

(CS) Emergency services launched a major operation on Sunday night after heavy rainfall flooded the Cité Simminger in Itzig.

Around 1.44am the Hesperange fire brigade was called into action. However, when they reached the site it was already completely flooded.

At 1.55am a red alert was issued, with 25 fire fighters trying to limit the damage. More than 750 sandbags were issued.

However, water levels rose very quickly and not all houses could be saved from flooding.

Police sought out residents in flooded homes via boat, as well as transporting workers from energy provider Creos to secure electricity lines.

No-one was injured, however, there is substantial material damage.
