(CS) The start-up behind the Game of Roads mobile app aimed at encouraging responsible driving among road users on Tuesday evening won the first Luxembourg Mind & Market award.

The start-up Motion-S was founded by researchers from the University of Luxembourg's Centre for Security, Reliability and Trust (SnT).

With their app they want to make roads safer and driving more environmentally friendly by reducing CO2 emissions as much as possible through smarter, more fuel-efficient driving.

Insurance company Bâloise was the first big partner to sign up to the project, hosting a competition to find the best driver in Luxembourg, with a number of prizes up for grabs.

The app was developed with a grant from national research fund FNR. It uses standard technology available on modern smartphones, such as GPS, the compass and the accelerometer. “An algorithm we developed processes the data from the sensors. It merges this data and from that creates a statistical model of the driver,” explained Dr German Castignani who was heavily involved in the development of the app, together with Dr Raphael Frank.

Mind & Market launched in Luxembourg this year as a partnership of Deloitte, the FNR, Luxinnovation and the University of Luxembourg. It is modelled on the Mind & Market Belgium project, which pursues the same mission in partnership with the Université Catholique de Louvain.

It is designed as a platform enabling innovators and creative minds meet market experts and investors as an accelerator and match-maker.

Tuesday marked the first Mind & Market Forum hosted in Luxembourg, a day of conferences, round table discussions and networking opportunities.

It also offered around 40 entrepreneurs the chance to pitch their start-ups and business ideas to professionals. Motion-S and its driving app made the best impression, winning the inaugural Luxembourg Mind & Market award – a trip to an innovation forum hosted in London later this year.
