(JB) Listeners of RTL radio were given a treat when Luxembourg Grand Duchess Maria-Teresa burst into song during an interview.

The mother-of-five, who was born in Havana, Cuba, and turns 60 on Tuesday, gave a brief rendition of “Guantanamera”, a patriotic Cuban song, and of Luxembourgish song “Feierwon”.

The 45-minute interview, in which the Grand Duchess spoke Luxembourgish, covered a range of topics, including the way mothers are treated in Luxembourg. Maria-Teresa said that more needs to be done to help women.

It touched briefly on a tribunal case in which a former employee of the court lodged a complaint for harassment and unfair dismissal. The Grand Duchess said the case would be dealt with in tribunal and there were no plans to make an out-of-court settlement.

She also stepped in to defend her daughter-in-law, Hereditary Grand Duchess Stéphanie in a separate case. She said her daughter-in-law was exploited by Brussels firm Kepha Invest to promote their activities. The firm is under investigation for defrauding 300 investors.

The Grand Duchess is active in a number of projects and while her birthday approaches, she said she had no plans to retire any time soon. On the contrary, she was already developing new projects.

Meanwhile, on Monday, the entire Grand Ducal family will be in the Vatican where they will have an audience with the Pope.
