German police may have made a major step in the investigation of a missing woman after finding human remains in woodland near Trier.

The remains were found by workers clearing woods close to Trier at around 9am on Monday morning.

Officers are expected to release further information during a press conference on Tuesday morning.

The discovery has led to speculation that the remains could belong to Tanja Gräff, a student who went missing in 2007.

The 21-year-old disappeared on June 7 after attending a student party where she was seen arguing with a young man.
