Independence day comes to Luxembourg
A friendship society is gearing up for the biggest party in the US calendar with two days of festivities planned in Luxembourg.
Independence day, on July 4, is a national holiday and a chance for a huge celebration in the US.
While there may not be any holiday in Luxembourg, US ex-pats in the Grand Duchy have plenty of opportunities to celebrate when the American Luxembourg Society raises the curtain on its own party.
On Sunday, July 3, up to 500 people are expected to join in American-style festivities at the Conterstuff in Contern. There, a traditional American BBQ awaits guests along with non-stop music, games, face-painting, flag-waving and, of course, the singing of the national anthem. The free event runs from noon to 6pm.
A second party is planned for July 4 with a special free open-air performance of live music from US musicians.
The American Music Abroad concert is an unmissable show, at which 85 talented musicians and 55 harmonious singers from American music colleges have been invited to perform.
The concert is performed at La Madelaine in Pétange from 8pm. In case of bad weather, it may be moved to the leisure centre.
Independence day or the fourth of July commemorates the day when American declared independence for British rule on July 4, 1776.
It is significant in Luxembourg both because of the high proportion of American ex-pats living there and because of the two country's links. Luxembourg saw a third of its population emigrate to the US during the late 1800s, a wave which prompted the creation of the American Luxembourg Society in 1882.
Today, the society works with other US organisations in Luxembourg to commemorate Thanksgiving and other key American dates. It also assists Luxembourg residents in tracing family trees where relatives may have emigrated to the US.
