(ADW) Mertet emergency services were called out to a rather unusual problem on Saturday: a distressed and injured swan in the River Sûre.

It was a walker who noticed the swan struggling to move properly in the waters near Wasserbillig and promptly alerted emergency services.

Rescuers arrived at the scene and managed to catch the injured animal on the banks of the Sûre before placing it in a special sling to immobilise it, refrain if from causing itself further injury and is also said to calm the bird.

On closer inspection it was discovered that the swan had been pierced in the right leg by two large fishing hooks together with fishing floats.

The already extremely weak animal was then transported to the specialist veterinary centre in Bettembourg to receive further treatment where is is said to be doing well.
