(CS) Even though more than half of the Luxembourg's population is registered on Facebook, only 16 out of 105 communes have joined the social network to keep in touch with their residents.

A study released by national statistics office in May showed that 57 percent of the population were registered on Facebook, with 8 percent registered on Twitter and 3 percent on Instagram.

Still, few of Luxembourg's communes have embraced social media as a way to communicate with the local population.

Among the most active is the “Ville de Luxembourg”, which counts over 51,500 likes, probably also including many people who do not actually live in the capital but want to remain information about what goes on in the City. A member of Facebook since 2009, the City of Luxembourg's site is managed by a member of the PR team together with a freelancer.

Dudelange joined Facebook just around two months ago, with the communications team in charge of the page, as well as the commune's Twitter, Instagram and YouTube accounts. It has since collected around 900 “likes”.

The use of the platform varies widely between communes. In Dippach, for example, only cultural events are posted. Elsewhere, the social networking site is also used to post information about council decisions or public service announcements.

Most of all, it gets the communes closer to their residents, but also visitors and tourists, with posts usually written in multiple languages and in a less formal style than other official correspondence.
