Outgoing Prime Minister Jean-Claude Juncker has said he does not intend to give up the fight after a coalition of the Greens, DP and LSAP pushed his CSV party out of government.

Speaking during the European summit in Brussels, the veteran politician confirmed his commitment to Grand Duchy politics. "My mindset is not that of someone who withdraws from Luxembourg policy, on the contrary,” AFP quoted him as saying.

At the same time, he gave no indication he would return to European responsibilities or succeed Herman Van Rompuy when he steps down as full-time European Council head in 2014.

Juncker calculated that he has participated in at least 120 European Council, saying that he thought last week's would be his last, news agency DPA quoted him as saying.

Regarding the future of Luxembourg's new government under the leadership of liberal Xavier Bettel, Van Rompuy was reserved. “Time will tell”, he said on Thursday while expressing his “admiration, respect and friendship” for a “committed European” in Juncker.
