(CS/vb) Politicians and businesspeople on Thursday rubbed shoulders, as KPMG officially inaugurated its new HQ in Kirchberg's financial district.

Nicknamed the apple strudel because of the exterior lattice, the building was designed by Luxembourg architect François Valentiny, who also created Luxembourg's pavilion at the 2010 World Expo in Shanghai.

The rusty exterior is aimed at evoking the Grand Duchy's industrial past, while the interior features 17,000 square metres of office space.

The new HQ allows KPMG to bring together its 1,255 employees currently spread across five different sites in Luxembourg.

Managing Partner Georges Bock welcomed guests to the swanky new offices, which combined sleek and simple design with fun features such as table football and an indoor golf course.

Finance Minister Pierre Gramegna was on site to congratulate KPMG on its development, with Infrastructure Minsiter François Bausch, Chamber of Deputies President Mars Di Bartolomeo and a number of coalition and opposition MPs also at the party.

Prime Minister Xavier Bettel meanwhile appeared as a hologram at the party. The Luxembourg Premier was in Berlin on Thursday evening en route to Slonsk in Poland, where he will join the Grand Duke at a commemorative ceremony marking the 70th anniversary of a WW2 prison massacre in which 91 Luxembourgers perished.
