(CS) Foreign minister Jean Asselborn has met South Sudan embassy chargé d'affaires Francis Nazario in Brussels to forge diplomatic ties.

The event on Wednesday came roughly six months after South Sudan's declaration of independence on July 9. Luxembourg was one of the first countries to recognise South Sudan's independence on the day.

Asselborn said Luxembourg had been following the country's route to independence closely and was now looking forward to forging a solid relationship with South Sudan.

While the ceremony had a symbolic character, concrete measures were announced, such as the training of civic aviation personnel, contributions to help the landmine problem in the country, as well as humanitarian aid.
