Asylum seeker applications further decline in August

The number of asylum seekers applying for international protection in Luxembourg has further decreased, with 76 applications filed in August this year, almost half the number registered the same time last year.

(CS) The number of asylum seekers applying for international protection in Luxembourg has further decreased, with 76 applications filed in August this year, almost half the number registered the same time last year.

Asylum seeker numbers have stayed consistently below last year's figures in 2013. July saw 106 applications, up from 89 in June, but numbers were back down to 76 in August. This compares to 137 applications in August last year.

The highest number of applicants came from Montenegro (13), followed by Bosnia Herzegovina (11) and Kosovo (10).

In comparison to July, the number of applicants from Kosovo fell the most (-26), with the biggest increase in applicants from Bosnia Herzegovina (+6).

On the whole, 52 applicants came from Europe, 18 from Africa and six from Asia.

So far this year, 79 people were recognised as refugees by the Luxembourg Foreign Ministry, while 620 applications were refused.

In August, 56 applicants were repatriated, with 500 repatriations since January 2013. Of these, 38 were forced and 462 voluntary.
