Bettel receives Grand Ducal order
(CS) Luxembourg Prime Minister Xavier Bettel was handed the prestigious Grand Cross of the Order of the Oak Crown by Grand Duke Henri at a ceremony on Friday.
This distinction is only awarded once a year – for the Grand Duke's official birthday. This year marks the first time Bettel will celebrate National Day on June 23 as Prime Minister.
Founded in 1841, the order today has five different grades, with the Grand Cross the highest, followed by Grand Officer, Commander, Officer and Knight.
The Order of the Oak Crown is one of four such honours in Luxembourg. The highest is the Order of the Gold Lion of the House of Nassau, awarded only to foreign sovereigns, princes of sovereign houses and heads of state.
Other distinctions include the Order of Adolphe of Nassau and the Order of Merit of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg.
