(CS) In the early hours of Wednesday morning the police were involved in a high speed car chase after a failed break-in.

The would-be burglars fled the scene at a sports shop in Wickringen after locals had alerted the police due to the noise. A police unit from Esch started the pursuit of a blue Audi A6 in direction of Pontpierre.

The flight continued on to the A4 in direction of Leudelange and later towards Esch-Alzette. The drivers of the car, which was carrying stolen Luxembourg licence plates 1136, had turned off the car's headlights. On their escape they broke through several road blocks put up by the police.

At the exit A13 Rodange/Petange a police officer tried to force the drivers to halt with a hand-held signalling disc. The car drove at the officer at full speed, apparently in an attempt to run them over. The police was able to jump to safety.

Following this event, another police officer shot at the vehicle's tyres. The delinquents were able to flee the scene towards Soleuvre and could not be overtaken.

Police are now asking for witnesses or anyone with useful information on the vehicle or the culprits to come forward and call emergency number 113. The criminal police Esch/Alzette are investigating the case.
