(CS) While it had been announced that Luxembourg City's town hall would be left in darkness during Earth Hour on Saturday the building remained illuminated between 8.30 to 9.30pm.

The City of Luxembourg had previously announced that it was joining the global Earth Hour movement, joining thousands of towns and cities around the globe in the challenge to switch off the lights for one hour to raise awareness for climate change and the environment.

However, nothing happened on Place Guillaume II when the clock struck 8.30pm. By 9.15pm the lights were still on, reported wort.lu/en photographer Guy Jallay who was meant to capture the town hall in darkness.

Luxembourg City mayor Xavier Bettel explained via Twitter that the person who was meant to switch off the light forgot.

In Esch/Alzette meanwhile Earth Hour went ahead as planned, with a bonfire and candles lit as the town hall lights were switched off. Unfortunately, the bad weather seemed to keep people away from the event which drew crowds last year.
