A walker was left with a broken leg when a branch torn from a tree by gale-force winds landed on her thigh.

The woman was walking along a countryside path between Mertzig and Dellen at around 12.40pm on Thursday when the accident occurred. The force of the branch broke the woman's femur. The victim was taken to hospital for treatment.

The storm caused a number of road traffic collisions in Luxembourg, including a five-car pile-up on the A1 at Munsbach. The collision occurred at around 8am. No-one was injured.

Motorists who parked their car at the Daich car park, in Ettelbruck, were also being urged to move their vehicles on Thursday afternoon because of fears that the neighbouring river would flood.
