(ADW) It was at about 1am on Wednesday morning when a gas explosion occurred in a house in Hesperange resulting in a fire and injuring the 93-year-old resident.

The house on rue de Bettembourg was completely destroyed in the blast and the sole occupant of the house, a man aged 93, was slightly injured but rushed to hospital for complete check-up.

The neighbouring houses, one of which the home of the old man’s son, were undamaged in the blast. Just how the gas explosion occurred has not yet been determined.

The blast and following fire, extinguished by Hesperange firefighters, completely destroyed the house.

Luxembourg City police patrols blocked off the road and fire investigators from the Criminal Investigation Department were involved in searching for clues at the site.

The area around the house and road should be cleared before rush-hour traffic on Wednesday morning.
