Gerard Lopez to buy Spa F1 circuit?
(ADW) Gerard Lopez, co-founder of Genii Capital and Lotus Renault GP team owner is reported to be interested in acquiring the legendary Spa-Francorchamp circuit in Belgium.
According to the RTBF (French Belgian television) the Luxembourg businessman is at the head of a group of investors aiming to acquire the Spa-Francorchamps circuit used for the Belgian Formula 1 Grand Prix.
Belgian authorities unaware
However, neither circuit CEO Pierre-Alain Thibaut, Spa Grand Prix CEO André Maes, or even Walloon Minister of Economy Jean-Claude Marcourt are reported to be aware of the affair.
In the coming Formula 1 seasons the Spa circuit will alternate between La Castellet in France ensuring the future of “the Ardennes toboggan run” as the Belgian circuit is fondly known.
Motor sports background
For Gerard Lopez, of course this would not be his first investment in motor sports, having taken partial ownership in 2009 of the Renault F1 Team, and then complete ownership of what is now the Lotus Renault GP team.
He is also the owner of Gravity Sport Management, a company that manages the careers of young racing drivers, including the Belgian Jérôme d'Ambrosio, currently driving for Virgin in Formula 1.
If the Spa deal goes ahead it will be the first time the Luxembourg businessman would be involved in actually organising Grand Prix.
