Grevenmacher bridge to open next week
(CS) The bridge between Grevenmacher and Wellen, just across the border in Germany, is expected to open on schedule next week Wednesday.
According to German newspaper “Trierischer Volksfreund”, the four and a half month construction work is set to come to an end soon, making it easier to cross-border commuters from the area to travel to Luxembourg.
Luxembourg shoppers who like bargain-hunting in Trier or run errands on the other side of the Moselle will also be relieved to hear that the popular route is open again.
Every day, around 15,000 motorists are thought to have used the bridge before it closed, according to the “Volksfreund”. Over past months, they have had to use other border crossings, such as Remich or Wormeldange, or a ferry between Oberbillig and Wasserbillig.
The 18-million-euro project began with the demolition of the existing bridge in May. Over the summer new bridge pillars were installed and the main section was assembled in Mertert.
In early August the bridge was then quite spectacularly transported by boat from Mertert to Grevenmacher for its installation.
