A total of 72 countries across the world have been ranked from best to worst for their English skills and Luxembourg has come out among the best in the world, ranking better than Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

(HP) Luxembourg is the seventh best country in the world for its level in English.

A total of 72 countries across the world have been ranked from the countries which speak the best to those which speak the worst English.

Luxembourg has been sandwiched between Singapore and Austria to finish seventh in the world ranking, stepping up a place from eighth position last year.

According to Education First the best English speakers outside of countries where English is the native language are the Dutch after the Netherlands climbed from second place in previous years to lead the table.

Following the Netherlands in second place is Denmark, with Sweden dropping from first place last year to third position.

Spain finished 25th, Italy was in 28th place, followed by France in 29th position.

Luxembourg fell into the "very high proficiency" category and in almost all countries surveyed women had stronger English skills than men.
