Juncker the most popular candidate - receives 55,968 votes
(CS) Prime Minister Jean-Claude Juncker secured a total of 55,968 votes in Sunday's election, followed by the LSAP's Jean Asselborn (38,257) and the DP's Xavier Bettel (32,064).
Asselborn, Luxembourg's Foreign Minister, turned out to be far more popular than the socialists' top candidate and Economy Minister Etienne Schneider, who received only 19,683 votes. Third most popular in the LSAP was Agriculture and Sport Minister Romain Schneider (12,389).
In the CSV meanwhile, Juncker took a clear lead with Finance Minister Luc Frieden ranking second at 29,441 votes and Delegate Minister for Sustainable Development in third place (17,174).
Among the DP, Bettel was the most popular with voters, followed by fellow top-candidates Claude Meisch (22,355) and MEP Charles Goerens (17,523).
In the fourth biggest party to emerge from the elections, “déi Gréng”, Félix Braz secured the most votes (19,782), followed by François Bausch (11,598) and Camille Gira (7,548).
In the Luxembourg electoral system voters can either submit one vote for a list, with each candidate receiving one vote, or they can split their votes between candidates (up to the total number of candidates on the list) and give candidates up to two votes.
