(ADW) The traditional Christmas Parade will not take place this year in Luxembourg City for financial reasons. Marc Weydert from the Office of Festivals, Fairs and Markets explained the reasons behind the decision.

Despite livening up the streets of Luxembourg City for a day of fun and festivities since 2004, the difficult decision to cancel the Christmas Parade for 2013 has been made. "Since it began, the Christmas Parade has not really evolved and needs a capital investment of about 70,000 euros to renew it. An investment that Luxembourg City does not wish to make," explained Weydert.

Organised by Romain Bernard, the Christmas Parade is funded by several sponsors and the City of Luxembourg, which invests "50,000 euros per Christmas Parade," said Weydert, who pointed out other problems such as security or building work on the Pont Adolphe bridge.

"Ensuring public safety when the sweets and candy throwing takes place would require more staff being hired, which would be a further blow. The work on Pont Adolphe further complicates things and would disrupt the procession's passage, given the fact that it cannot pass on either the Boulevard Royal or Boulevard Roosevelt. The Christmas Parade would have been really compromised this year,” concluded Weydert.

However, the head of the Office of Festivals, Fairs and Markets is hopeful that a solution can be found for next year so that the Christmas Parade can brighten up the streets of the capital once again.
