(FeMo/CS) Since the end of September foreigners can sign the Welcome and Integration contract (CAI), but the initiative comes at a price.

The contract, which is aimed at foreigners intending to stay in Luxembourg for longer periods of time, offers discounts for classes in one of the three official languages, as well as civics classes, which can count towards gaining the Luxembourg nationality.

The contract, which can be signed by any foreign resident aged 16 or over, could also count towards gaining a long-term residence permit.

While the advantages of familiarising foreigners with Luxembourg history, language, culture and politics are clear, the contract also clocks in at a running cost of around 400,000 euros.

In 2009 and 2010 combined around 160,000 euros were spent on advertising, while an additional 20,000 euros went into translating the contract and corresponding documents. Around 70,000 euros were spent on advisory services. Furthermore a 2011 loan worth 144,000 euros was provided for the project.
