A petition opposing a smoking ban in bars and clubs has attracted more than 6,000 signatures in Luxembourg.

The document was launched by food and beverages union Horesca in response to the Luxembourg health ministry's plans to further extend anti-smoking legislation in public places.

Smoking is already banned in public places where food is prepared and or consumed. Some members of Horesca believe that implementing a ban on all enclosed public places will make the lives of the country's 1,100 café and bar owners difficult.

The petition is being circulated among bars and cafés in Luxembourg until mid-March. Horesca says that it does not wish to take sides in the debate, merely it wishes to promote the freedom of choice.

A draft law on banning smoking in public places in Luxembourg is expected to be presented to the chamber of deputies in March.
