Luxembourg's former finance minister, Luc Frieden, has stepped down from politics for a career in banking.

Mr Frieden will give up his parliamentary duties to follow a new challenge with Deutsche Bank as Vice-Chairman. Frieden will begin his new role on September 15 and will be based in London.

"Luc Frieden will at the end of this parliamentary session leave his parliamentary duties for professional reasons," the CSV party said in a statement released on Thursday.

"Luc Frieden has decided to launch a new challenge abroad. Starting in September, he will be Vice-chairman of Deutsche Bank. His principal place of employment shall be London."

Luc Frieden was a Luxembourg minister from 1998 to 2013. During the last elections, he received the most votes for the CSV Centre region. It is expected that Tessy Scholtes will be the first candidate to replace Frieden in the Chamber of Deputies.
