(CS) The “Luxemburger Wort” is the most-read local daily in the Grand Duchy, with roughly a third of the population identifying as readers, while RTL grabbed the top spot for most popular radio station and website.

These results were revealed as part of a TNS Ilres survey on media proliferation in Luxembourg, conducted between October 2014 and the end of May this year.

The survey found that 168,700 people of those aged 15 and over – or 35.9 percent of the population – read the “Luxemburger Wort” in print, with an additional 14,700 e-paper readers.

Second most-read paid-for newspaper was the “Tageblatt” (50,000 readers aged 15 or over + 4,100 e-paper readers), followed by “Le Quotidien” (28,700 + 1,700 e-paper readers), the “Journal” (7,200) and the “Lëtzebuerger Vollek” (1,900).

Free newspaper “L'Essentiel” ruled in a competition-free market with 133,000 daily paper readers and 6,700 e-paper readers.

In the internet market, rtl.lu took the largest share with 26 percent of the population reached, or 126,900 readers aged 12 or over. News platform wort.lu, including all its language editions, came second with 83,200 people reached. The German and French editions of lessentiel.lu counted 68,800 daily visitors combined.

The most popular radio station was the Luxembourgish-language RTL channel with 183,500 daily listeners aged 12 or over, followed by Eldoradio (109,000) and the German RTL station (42,800).

Elsewhere, the survey showed a strong market for Portuguese-language media. Radio Latino had 18,700 daily listeners. Newspaper Contacto was also popular, with 50,100 weekly readers. Additionally, Portuguese television station RTP Internacional was among the top ten foreign channels watched in Luxembourg, with an audience of 19,000 people aged 12 or over.

Also in the top ten (in descending order) where TF1, ARD, RTL Television, ZDF, Pro7, M6, France 2, Sat1 and Vox. Unsurprisingly, the Luxembourgish RTL television station was the most popular local broadcast TV offering, reaching 23.8 percent of the population.

For the survey, a representative group of 4,103 people aged 12 or over was polled, with results extrapolated to the total number of residents.
