Luxembourg shops will ring in the summer with the sound of buzzing tills when the summer sales get underway this Saturday.

June 29 marks the official start date of the Grand Duchy's summer sales and, after a slow season marred by poor weather, the bargain-hunting opportunities are expected to be numerous.

"The sales will be interesting this year," said a saleswoman from a Luxembourg store, adding: "stocks are virtually intact because of the bad weather. There are some good bargains to be found."

In France, where the sales begin on June 26, shopkeepers claim the first six months of the year to have been the worst season for 30 years, with turnover at -15 percent in some areas. According to the French Fashion Institute (IFM), sales of textiles and clothing declined overall by 10% in May 2013 compared to May 2012.

They blame the catastrophic weather, but also the financial crisis that has forced consumers to rein-in spending.

Bargain-hunters who miss out on the first day of sales on Saturday, will have a second chance when Luxembourg City's stores open on Sunday, June 30, from 2pm until 6pm.

To coincide with the Sunday shopping, bus routes 1 to 25 will operate a free service for passengers. The shopping bus from the Glacis car park will run every six minutes from 1.30pm until 6.30pm.

Luxembourg's sales run until July 13.
