A handful of giant decorative elephants which went on display around Luxembourg City have been damaged, organisers of the elephant parade have confirmed.

The free, outdoor exhibition aimed at raising money for good causes saw 55 baby elephant statues located around Luxembourg city earlier this month.

Just two weeks later, and at least four have reportedly been vandalised with pieces broken off. Some have been repaired by artist Gabriel Hank but not all of them could be fixed.

Exhibition organisers said that they regretted the damage that had been done and appealed to people to respect the work.

“It is really sad that some people can not respect the art of others," explaining that many hours of work had been put in by artists to decorate the elephants.

The proceeds from elephants sold are to be donated to projects working to preserve the habitats of endangered Asian elephants.
