Three Luxembourg wild swimming spots and a number of Greater Region bathing sites have been given a glowing review in an EU report on bathing water quality.

The Weiswampacher lake in the north of Luxembourg, Lac de la Haute-Sûre in the centre and Remerschen's man-made lake in the south east were labelled excellent for their water quality.

These sites can be visited by members of the public during the official bathing season, which runs from May 1 to August 31.

In all other waters, such as the Sûre, swimming is prohibited. Other sites in the Greater Region also received positive endorsements in the report.

These have been highlighted in the map below. The European Commission bathing water quality report for 2014 studied water quality in more than 21,000 bathing areas, including lakes, rivers and seashores in the 28 EU member states, plus Switzerland and Albania.

Of all those examined, 83 percent had good quality and 12 percent achieved the minimum standard. Only two percent were rated unsatisfactory.
