Take a train ride through a Bettembourg back garden!
(ADW) In a private garden in Bettembourg apart from the usual foliage and flowers, there’s a rather original feature. A train runs around Marcel Lorent’s garden!
A single locomotive, and sometimes an entire train with passengers chugs its way around the terrain. There’s even a tunnel, ravines, ponds and several bridges.
You’d have thought that the neighbours in the adjoining house might object to such a back garden feature but quite the opposite, they enjoy Marcel’s railway.
That’s because it is actually a model train (1:29 scale to be precise) and Marcel has been building it for about 10 years piece by piece. Today it is an impressing 150 metres in length and now has become part of the garden’s decoration, all be it a moving practical one.
Marcel explained that he comes from a family that has always worked with trains. His father was a train driver his grandfather worked as junction operator or “Switchman”, and his uncle worked for CFL in Luxembourg City. “That meant that as a child I often travelled by train and it always fascinated me back then” he explained.
But Marcel himself never actually worked with trains but became an electrician and computer scientist. It wasn't until he retired that his passion for trains took on a new lease of life and he began building his own railway in his garden.
At wort.lu, in our series of Luxembourg garden articles, we paid a visit to Marcel Lorent and his garden, equipped with a video camera and took the train ride. Take a trip yourself in the video above, and check out the photo gallery too.
